Ricky Jones, a suspended Labour councillor, has been charged with inciting violent disorder following his remarks at a London counter-protest.
Videos online appear to show Jones, 57, urging a crowd in Walthamstow to commit violence against far-right protesters. The Metropolitan Police arrested him on Thursday, and he was charged on Friday, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Jones is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon.
Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London North, Jaswant Narwal, said: “The CPS has approved charges against Ricky Jones for inciting violent disorder. The footage from August 7 shows him encouraging violence against far-right demonstrators.”
Narwal stressed that Jones’ arrest and charges occurred within 48 hours and reminded the public to avoid sharing or commenting on the case to prevent prejudice.
Jones, who has been a Dartford councillor since 2019, is currently suspended from the Labour Party.
